It’s Time for a Beach Day!

California is blessed with one of the best coastlines in the United States. But coming from an Orange County resident of more than thirty years, I may have a slightly biased opinion about how amazing our beaches are.

The water’s the warmest it’s been all year, the sun is shining and the sea breeze is blowing, all of which make it the perfect time to have a beach day…or several. Whether you’ve lived in Orange County for your whole life or you’ve just started calling it home, here are some of my favorite beaches in South Orange County.

Top 5 Beaches in South Orange County

1000 Steps Beach – It isn’t called 1000 Steps Beach for nothing. This beach is definitely one of the most challenging beaches to get to in all of OC, but if you’re up for it, it’s worth the work. Sitting just off of Pacific Coast Highway, this secluded spot is not for the faint of heart. Even though the incline can be quite intimidating, don’t let it scare you. Once you get to the bottom, a cove with sweeping cliffs, rock formations and plenty of beach awaits. Just don’t forget to pack light, getting in is way easier than getting out.

Corona Del Mar – If you have a young family or small children, this is one of the best beaches to bring them to. First of all, the waves aren’t as big as some of the other parts of Orange County due to where the beach is situated along the jetty. And secondly, one of the best tide pools in the area is just a short walk from the beach. With all kinds of nooks and crannies for your little ones to explore as well as fire pits and volleyball courts, this family friendly beach is a great place to spend a summer day.

Salt Creek Beach—You have a couple of options on how you can choose to enjoy this beautiful beach. Salt Creek Beach has a huge grassy picnic area that overlooks the ocean, perfect for family meals, dates or even taking a nap. There’s plenty of parking, as well as shuttles that go to and from the parking areas to the beach as well. On top of that, there is an expansive beach that draws surfers, body boarders and sunbathers from all over OC to its shores. And if you’re ever in the area around sunset, you won’t regret heading down to the beach or grassy area to take it all in. The views are absolutely incredible.

San Onofre —If you like surfing, swimming and camping this is probably the beach for you. Known as one of the most popular campsites in South Orange County, San Onofre is also one of the most popular surfing beaches in Southern California. There are multiple surfing breaks within this area drawing surfers from up and down the California coast. Bring your RV down to the beach for the weekend and enjoy all the San Onofre has to offer.

Laguna Beach —It should come as no surprise that Laguna Beach is on our list of best beaches in South Orange County. This beautiful place doesn’t need much explanation. In fact, it’s one of those places that you need to see for yourself if you haven’t already. If you want to get a bird’s eye view of Laguna Beach, do the Top of the World hike which takes you up to a lookout point with a panoramic view of the coast. With beautiful scenery all around, basketball courts and plenty of other activities, Laguna Beach is one of those places that will never get old.
